Pratchett Becomes Patron Of Alzheimers Charity

Terry Pratchett has become a patron of the Alzheimer's Research Trust (Art) following his diagnosis with dementia at the end of last year.

The Discworld author said he had Alzheimer's in December and donated $1 million (£513,000) to help find a cure for dementia.

He said he is "proud" to be associated with the Art.

"Alzheimer's is a nasty disease, surrounded by shadows and small, largely unseen tragedies," Pratchett said.

"I understand the desperation of sufferers and their carers and their hopes for, if not a cure, at least some regime that might help us live with Alzheimer's."

Art chief executive Rebecca Wood said the charity is "so pleased" to have Pratchett's support, describing him as "an inspiration".

"With a force like Terry demanding a drastic increase in dementia research funding, the government must recognise soon that it can no longer put off urgently needed reform," she added.

The announcement was made at the same time as the Art released a survey which revealed that 25 million people in the UK are affected by dementia.

Over four in ten people (42 per cent) know a close friend, family member or someone else with dementia.

Director Anthony Minghella dies, aged 54

The Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella has died. He was 54.
According to BBC News 24, Anthony Minghella died of a haemorrhage following an operation last week.
Anthony Minghella won the Best Director Oscar for his film 'The English Patient' in 1997.
His other films included 'Breaking and Entering', 'Cold Mountain', 'The Talented Mr Ripley', 'Mr Wonderful' and 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'.
He also directed 'Play' as part of the 'Beckett on Film' collection.
His most recent film, 'The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency', was due to be shown on the BBC at Easter.
Jude Law, who worked with the director on 'Breaking and Entering', 'Cold Mountain' and 'The Talented Mr Ripley' said: "I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Anthony's untimely death. I worked with him on three films, more than with any other director, but had come to value him more as a friend than as a colleague."
He continued: "He was a brilliantly talented writer and director who wrote dialogue that was a joy to speak and then put it on to the screen in a way that always looked effortless. He made work feel like fun."
Law added: "He was a sweet, warm, bright and funny man who was interested in everything from football to opera, films, music, literature, people and, most of all, his family whom he adored and to whom I send my thoughts and love. I shall miss him hugely."
Film producer David Puttnam said: "I am shattered. He was a very important person in the film community because not only was he a fine, fine writer... and made the transfer into becoming a really excellent director, he was also a really beautiful man."
He continued: "I just spoke to Alan Parker and it was the line Alan used: 'he was a beautiful man'; he was a lot of fun to be with; he was thoughtful and intelligent."
He added: "This is a shattering blow from someone who was a major figure in an important industry and had a lot to go on and contribute."

Irwin family launch Australia Zoo dolls

Television star Terri Irwin and her children Bindi and Robert have launched a new range of their Australia Zoo toys in New York.
Terri Irwin, whose husband Steve was killed by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary, spoke about her children's experience of snake bites during the launch.
Speaking about her four-year-old son Robert, she said: "He picked one of them up and it bit him on the finger, and he was so proud to have copped his first hit."
"He said, 'I hope it wasn't venomous,' so I assured Robert I wouldn't actually let him play with venomous snakes," she said.
She also revealed that her nine-year-old daughter Bindi was first bitten by a snake when she was just 18 months old.
Bindi said of the toy launch: "It's every little girl's dream to have an exact lookalike doll. It's amazing."
